Checking performance and using systems to drive improvement

Smart audits will identify vulnerable areas within your organisation and help you prioritise action to save time, money, and potential prosecution.

We will work with you to set the scope of audits.  This can be focused on:

  • H&S
  • Environment
  • Sustainability
  • HSEQ

Functional areas or sites

Our structured approach will consider your management, your performance and compliance.  We summarise the findings to give you a set of practical, pragmatic recommendations.

The starting, low cost, one day audit is our Safety Ribbon Award (SRA), and Green Ribbon Award (GRA). These snap-shot reviews look at key areas of your performance and compliance in both safety and sustainability.  Please see below for more information.

Management systems such as ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and OSHAS 18001 provide frameworks to drive continual improvement in performance.  We can undertake a gap analysis of your current ways of working and recommend actions.  This includes supporting you to embed systems, auditing your approach, helping you transition to new standards and achieving certification.

We want to take you on a journey of improvement that followings the tried and tested management system approach of ‘plan, do, check, act’ which is fundamental to HSG65 and ISO systems.  We always start with  an audit.  This way we all gain a consistent and common understanding of where you are, your challenges, and your goals.  We want to be part of your team, providing expertise and support to address the challenges and make a difference.

We recommend periodic audits to provide an independent, objective evaluation of performance.  This provides assurance that you are achieving your goals and reaching required standards, and that you pick up issues before they become concerns.  Regular audits can be part of an annual programme, aligned to your management systems (such as OHSAS 18001, ISO 9001 and ISO14001) or stand-alone.  We can focus the review in different ways.  This can include looking at activities affected by changes in requirements, or add to investigations following incidents.

When we agree to deliver a contract for services with you, we will include an audit against the Green Ribbon as a standard an element of the ‘bundle’ of services.

The purpose of this award is first and foremost an audit to provide businesses and schools with an understanding of their current compliance level. This audit fulfils both the CHECK and ACT portion of the HSG65 guidance by both reviewing safety performance, and providing feedback to the Directors/Governors annually. The bespoke School Safety Ribbon Award also serves as an honour given to schools based on merit and performance in the management of their health & safety systems, and includes the crucial area of safeguarding.

Organisations achieving the standard will be permitted to use the logo on letter heading and other correspondence.

The Safety Ribbon Award takes the form of a one-day audit on site. There are 55 audit points which will be checked on the day. Anyone who undertakes an audit must achieve an 85% or more to pass. Once an organisation passes, they are entitled to use the Safety Ribbon logo on their website and headed paper for one year.

Organisations who continue to earn this award demonstrate that not only are their Safety Management System arrangements in order, but they are embracing health and safety into their culture to a high standard which can potentially help to offset numerous overhead costs, including insurance premiums.

The Green Ribbon Award assesses 50 aspects of your environmental management and compliance activities against our GRA standard.  This follows the Plan, Do, Check and Act cycle of environmental management systems, such as ISO 14001.  The resulting report compares your performance to the GRA standard and highlights opportunities for improvement, including readiness for ISO 14001.

What’s included?

We take a snap-shot of 50 different environmental management and compliance issues and assess how they are addressed.

The Green Ribbon standard sets a level of best practice which you can use as your baseline.  The report will highlight areas of strength and opportunities to improve.  Repeating the assessment is a great way to benchmark your successes.

The International Standards Organisation (ISO) establish and develop standards covering almost every industry.  The aim is to deliver consistency all over the world.

Amongst their standards are frameworks for management.  The Quality Management System standard, ISO 9001, and the Environmental Management System standard ISO14001 are now aligned and use a common framework.  Work is progressing to include Health and Safety (BS OHSAS 18001) in the same way.

ISO 14001: 2015 Environmental Management maps out a framework that an organsiation can follow to show the company management, employees and external stakeholders that environmental impacts are being measure, monitored and improved.

ISO 9001: 2015 Quality Management provides guidance and tools for companies and organizations who want to ensure that their products and services consistently meet customer’s requirements, and that quality is consistently improved.

ISO 50001 Energy management is based on the same management system model as ISO 9001 or ISO 14001.  It provides a framework to integrate energy management into processes to improve all aspects of energy management.

BS OHSAS 18001 sets out the minimum requirements for occupational health and safety management best practice. (in the process of becoming an international standard in 2016/17 – ISO 45001)
